World Blood Donor Day 2022 is celebrated on 14th June all over the world as an awareness event to educate the public to donate blood, the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion, to honour voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood, and also to honour blood donation organizations, both government and NGOs. This day promotes blood donation and encourages people to donate blood to save lives. Mexico will host World Blood Donor Day 2022 through its National Blood Centre. The global event will be held in Mexico City on 14 June 2022.
A Universal Need
Whether it is patients with blood and bone marrow disorders; victims of accidents, emergencies, trauma, and disasters; women suffering from bleeding associated with pregnancy and childbirth; patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures; or little children suffering from severe anemia due to malnutrition or malaria –blood and blood products are life-saving resources and a universal need. However, not everyone gets easy and proper access to safe blood. Blood shortages are common among low- and middle-income countries.
‘Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives’
The above is the 2022 Slogan for World Blood Donor Day as stated by World Health Organisation (WHO). It is to draw attention to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities. The aim is to ‘thank blood donors in the world and to create wider public awareness of the need for regular, unpaid blood donation’, to highlight the need for committed, year-round blood donation, to maintain adequate supplies, and achieve universal and timely access to safe blood transfusion. WHO also aims to recognize and promote the values of voluntary unpaid blood donation in enhancing community solidarity and social cohesion as also to ‘raise awareness of the need for increased investment from governments to build a sustainable and resilient national blood system and increase collection from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors, a WHO spokesperson said.
Dissemination of Success Stories To Electronic & Print Media
WHO also proposes to disseminate to various media outlets stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood, and to motivate people in good health who have never given blood to begin doing so.
Social Media Broadcasts, Ceremonies, Social Networking Campaigns
Other activities that WHO proposes to help promote the slogan of this year’s World Blood Donor Day may include donor appreciation ceremonies, special media broadcasts, social media posts featuring individual blood donors with the slogan, meetings, and workshops, and musical and artistic events to thank blood donors and celebrate solidarity; and also coloring iconic monuments red! Isn’t that a glorious and effective way to spread the message across?
