Mental health facilities in India and it’s scenario

Mental hospitals are a crucial part of health services in India. We fail to realize that it is a serious issue. The stigma with mental illness still exists in 21st century. The only reason for establishing mental hospital was to keep the mentally ill person away from the community in order to treat them well. Majority of the mental asylums in India were built during the pre-British eras. In this article, I’ll discuss about the scenario of mental health facilities in India.

A report by World Health Organisation revealed that 7.5% of the population suffers from some mental illness. Mental health issues grow every other day. Millions are battling to survive from depression, ADHD, anxiety, panic attack, bipolar, schizophrenia and other mental health issues.

Mental peace is important. Insurance companies never provide medical insurance to those who are suffering through mental illness. Admitting to a good private hospital can definitely burn your pocket. Insurance for mentally ill people is necessary. The government hospitals are pathetic and have very few beds for mental ill people. People suffering are named as crazy or mad. Hence, it makes the person feel disgusted about it. These kinds of words can worsen their situation.

Not only in India but all over the world, development of mental health facilities is sluggish. Lack of funding or perspective for it makes it more difficult.

People here in India are shy to discuss about their mental issues due to the taboo. Without mental health there can be no true physical health. Professional help is necessary and one should consider it. To sum up, the scenario of mental health facilities is quite poor and needs to be upgraded as it’s a major concern.
