Ways to Protect your Child from Summer Heat

After being confined into their homes and having had online classes for two whole years as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, our kids are now breathing sighs of relief (along with their parents) as they are finally going for physical classes. Also, they are now able to venture out into parks and run with joy in their hearts to play with friends among flowers and trees. However, all this excitement seems to be getting dampened by a new threat, the heat wave.
This year summer arrived in March itself and mid April to mid June months are slated to be the hottest all over India, threatening to break new records. With temperature soaring with each passing day, venturing out even for a few minutes is proving to be difficult. In order to make our kids summer-safe, we should always keep a water bottle with them and also keep the following points in mind.

Hydration

To safeguard our little ones from heat related issues such as dehydration, dizziness or heat stroke, we have to ensure they consume two to three litres water everyday, even if they don't feel thirsty. We can offer and tempt them with coconut water, lemonade, bel, or rooh afza which are all considered to be much more hydrating than plain water.

Limit outside play

The Sun is considered to be relentless from 11-5 pm. Planning indoor activities beforehand for our kids such as art and craft, favourite book reading, and play dates with friends at this time will ensure our child is engaged and happy. Also, home assignments and some explorations such as searching into the globe or playing quiz with World and India maps are some other options that can be explored.

Generous use of sunscreen

Our children's skin is more delicate and prone to infections than adults. In order to avoid sunburn, rashes and acne, sunscreen should be applied to all the exposed parts of the body, including face. Dermatologists advise to use two to three fingers of sunscreen for entire body.

Dress them lightly

Dress them in loose, short, and light coloured cotton clothes as light colours reflect light instead of absorbing it. And cotton soaks sweat and prevents rashes and itching in sweltry heat.

Healthy food

Junk, fried, fatty or stale food should be completely avoided and only seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables should be fed to our tiny tots to keep them active and cool. Fresh and light food will keep their immunity high and hydration good.

Warning signs

Despite these precautions, our delicate little humans are still vulnerable to the heat. Hence, we should keep an eye open for signs of heat stroke. If they feel warm to touch, excessively sweating, looking tired and weak, complaining of headache or stomach ache, or nauseous or vomiting, we should immediately take them to a cooler environment and provide them with ample fluids and rest. A doctor needs to be consulted as well.
Summer time is vacations and play time but our carefree kids need to be well cared for so that they can enjoy being themselves again after a long, forced hiatus. Let's make it happen.
